Elmhurst Academy Celebrates Kid Inventors’ Day

January 17th, 2020

January 17, 2020—Elmhurst Academy students put on their thinking caps, adjusted their goggles, and brought to life their own inventions in celebration of the national Kid Inventors’ Day.

This day commemorates the birthday of all-around genius and kid inventor, Benjamin Franklin and celebrates kid inventors around the world. It also aims to encourage children to be curious about the world around them and to be creative when solving problems.

The academy students used their own ingenuity as well as group collaboration to experience the thrill of invention in the classroom. They brainstormed their own unique inventions by sketching sets of detailed blueprints and then constructed 3D models using recyclable resources.

Kid Inventors’ Day allowed for the students to discover their own innovation early in their development, gain the confidence to think creatively, and learn the value of collaboration to accomplish great outcomes.

Grand Master Ko Visits Elmhurst Academy

Tuesday, December 17th 2019

On Tuesday, December 17th the preschool students of the Prairie classroom at Elmhurst Academy welcomed Grand Master Ko into their classroom to conclude their global study of South Korea. Grand Master Ko was born in Seoul, South Korea and studied the art of Tae Kwon Do for over 48 years. He holds 31 years of experience in teaching Tae Kwon Do, self defense and Olympic sparring. As a coach to the Korean National Sparring team for over 11 years, he brings his expertise in team leadership and olympic level coaching to the US though his Tae Kwon Do school, located in Wheaton, IL.

Originated in Korea, Taekwondo is a martial art of self-defence in which the competitors use both their hands and feet. In ancient times, Koreans practiced Taekwondo as a mandatory preparation for war. With the passage of time, Taekwondo gradually became a folk sport. In 1971, it was designated as Korea’s national sport. Today it has grown into an international sport with around 100 million participants globally.

After a brief history of Taekwondo, Grand Master Ko gave the Prairie class a demonstration and then taught the students some basic punching and kicking techniques. Students also explored various tools that Grand Master Ko uses to teach others at his studio, Ko’s Champion Taekwondo.

Elmhurst Academy’s STEM Committee Presents Annual Science Olympiad

Friday, December 13th 2019

The S.T.E.M. program at Elmhurst Academy builds a foundation for future learning and scientific inquiry. Scientific knowledge is cumulative: to learn new things, you must build on what you already know. Children at birth are natural scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers. They consider the world around them and try to make sense of it the best way they know how: touching, tasting, building, dismantling, creating, discovering, and exploring.

On Friday, December 13th, Elmhurst Academy celebrated their Annual Science Olympiad! Elmhurst Academy students welcomed parents into the classrooms to lead and participate in various hands-on science explorations that coincide with the learning that is happening in each classroom. Activities included water exploration, lights, seasons, magnets, and the solar system!
