Each year Elmhurst Academy hosts a number of special events highlighting S.T.E.M (science, technology, engineering and math), Arts & Humanities, the Environment, Health & Safety, and Literacy. You are welcome to view the photos below from some of Elmhurst Academy's most recent events.

September, 2015

 

Celebrating Our Italian Roots

Elmhurst Academy teaches with an emphasis on the Reggio Emilia influenced philosophy, an Italian approach to learning steeped in art, nature, community and is based around certain fundamental values about how children learn.To help build our school community at the beginning of the school year, our classrooms participate in a special study of Reggio Emilia, Italy. The Elmhurst Academy philosophy is inspired by these early childhood schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy. It is our goal to help build an understanding of the culture and diversity of this area of the globe with our students.

 

Peace Around the World

As Elmhurst Academy celebrates International Day of Peace this month, each classroom will be studying famous Peace Art/Monuments and Symbols from around the world. They will also participate in a school wide peace art installation as well as creating their peace tables, bench or quilt and participating in the peace crane project, a global project founded on spreading the hope of peace.

17th Annual Fall Harvest Festival

On Friday, October 16, 2015 Elmhurst Academy held it’s Annual Fall Harvest Festival. EA students along with their families and friends enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of fall fun. Our outdoor campus was filled with fall-inspired activities and attractions for all ages.

November 2015

 

Veterans Day

On November 11, 2015 Elmhurst Academy welcomed military veterans into the classrooms to honor and celebrate Veteran's Day. The distinguished veterans spoke about the critical role of our military, and how they personally protected our freedoms while serving.

 

America Recycles Day

In an effort to promote responsibility for our planet’s well-being, Elmhurst Academy celebrated National Recycling Day on Friday, November 13, 2015.

 

World Kindness Day -- Friday, November 13, 2015

World Kindness Day is a global 24-hour celebration dedicated to paying-it-forward and focusing on the good. In celebration of World Kindness Day, the students and staff at Elmhurst Academy performed various acts of kindness throughout the day.

 

 

December 2015

 

Block Building Days

On December 29 and 30, 2015 the students of Elmhurst Academy participated in the exploration of blocks and the discovery of new engineering feats by building with them. New mathmatics skills, such as logic, reasoning, and classification, were practiced during the planning and construction phases.

 

 

January 2016

 

Winter Program & Silent Auction, "Winter Around the World"

The annual winter program and silent auction is a wonderful family tradition at Elmhurst Academy. This year it was held on Saturday, January 16, 2016 at Drury Lane in Oak Brook, Illinois. In addition to student live performances and video presentations, the academy hosts an annual silent auction to help raise funds for many needed curriculum materials and school enhancements to maintain the growth and success of our school.

 

Kid Inventors Day

On Monday, January 25, 2016, Elmhurst Academy celebrated Kid Inventors Day. Each year the world honors one of America's founding fathers of innovation, Benjamin Franklin, who invented swim flippers at age twelve! Hundreds of thousands of inventions are created by children each year! Elmhurst Academy students celebrated by showcasing their own ingenuity and the value of brainstorming together. A special thanks to all of the parents who came out to help!

Inspire Your Heart With Art Day 

On Monday, February 1, 2016 the students of Elmhurst Academy created art of all shapes, sizes and varieties. They were able to see how art can be inspirational and have a positive effect on the lives of those who create and appreciate art.

 

Leap-er-cise Day -- Sponsored By: The Project Health Committee

On Monday, February 29th, the students at Elmhurst Academy celebrated "Leap Year" in the first "Leap-er-cise Day"! During this interactive field-day, the students in the River, Prairie, Woodlands and Lakeview Classrooms actively participating in a variety of challenging gross motor stations to strengthen their leaping, jumping and hopping skills. Promoting such physical activities helps young children strengthen the muscles which are fundamental in their Gross Motor Development.   

 

 

March 2016

 

National Read Across America Day

The 18th annual reading motivation and awareness program held on March 2, 2016 calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading and the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. The students of Elmhurst Academy also celebrated by participating in fun, educational activities and games.

 

World Water Day

On March 22, 2016 Elmhurst Academy celebrated World Water Day. Students participated in water-related activities, and explored the importance of this natural resource and ways people can conserve it.

 

 

April 2016

 

National Child Abuse Prevention Month

The month of April is designated National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The student artists at Elmhurst Academy painted pinwheels that will be on displayed at the James R. Thompson Center in Chicago and at the DuPage County Courthouse in Wheaton, IL to commemorate the lives of the abused or neglected children this year and spread awareness.

The Week of the Young Child

The National Week of the Young Child, April 10-16, 2016, is a national campaign for early childhood education awareness. It is a way for parents and educators to get more involved with the advocacy for children. The theme for Week of the Young Child 2016 is Celebrating Our Youngest Learners. Elmhurst Academy, in cooperation with the National Association for the Education of Young Children, is honoring young children and celebrating the teachers who teach them. In observance of Week of the Young Child, students at Elmhurst Academy hand painted one of kind pins for parents and EA teachers to wear during the week-long celebration.

 

Elmhurst Academy Family Night & "Outside the Lines" Student Art Show 

On Saturday, April 16, 2016 friends and families of Elmhurst Academy explored the many wonders at Kohl Children's Museum. While at the museum and “Outside the Lines” Student Art Gallery sponsored by the EA Arts & Humanity Committee. This special exhibit showcased the artistic creativity and imaginations of the talented early childhood students at Elmhurst Academy. Families will also viewed the “Trash to Treasure” Trash Art Totem Pole recycled art submission. First Place: The Kuhrt family from the Prairie classroom. As the first place winner the Kuhrt family received a gift certificate to the Elmhurst Art Museum. Two families tied for second place: The Ridgeway family in Woodlands and the Creekmur family in Lakeview.

 

Earth Flag Presentation

On Wednesday, April 20, 2016 the faculty and students of Elmhurst Academy were presented with the S.C.A.R.C.E. Earth Flag by Kay McKeen, Founder and Executive Director of S.C.A.R.C.E. 

 

S.C.A.R.C.E. stands for "School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education". This community and family event showcased Elmhurst Academy's eco-friendly activities and passion for caring for the Earth through school-wide environmental practices and student curriculum.

 

Author, Nancy Gee, Visits Elmhurst Academy

On May 6, 2016, the Elmhurst Academy Literacy Committee welcomed a special guest, children’s author Nancy Gee, to speak to the students about her job as a children’s author. Mrs. Gee is the author of the book The Secret Drawer, and during her visit she shared her new book, The Secret Path, with the students. After the reading, students interacted with flying squirrel puppets, just like the main characters in the book, and talked to Mrs. Gee about her job as an author.
